I am in need of your help. I always get a new book before a trip with the intent of reading it on the plane and during lay-overs. I am needing recommendations. Something light and fun. I am not trying to better myself, just spend time in a fun world for a while. So, let me know what you would recommend.

News & Politics QotD: State of the Union

Did you watch the State of the Union last night? What did you think about the President's remarks?

Of course I watched the SOTU, even though I can barely force myself to watch and listen to that man speak. Everytime he winks at someone, I feel ill. As far as the content of the speech, I felt that he re-hashed issues from his entire presidency, rather than looking forward to the next year. He really does not seem to grasp the urgency of the state of the economy. And when the topic turns to the "war on terror", he begins to border on delusional. I really am not sure if he gets what damage he has done to our reputation around the world. I almost laughed last night when he got to his "threats" in the speech. He kept telling Congress that they had better do what he wants, or he will veto, or issue executive orders. Doesn't he realize that he is currently a lame duck, and the entire Congress is waiting to see who will get the job next?

Life QotD: Always Learning

If money and time were not an issue, what would you like to learn how to do?

I would love to study languages. The 2 years of French I took in high school whetted my appetite to learn more. I would love to become fluent in French, Italian, Russian. And then just for fun I would like to study Latin, Celtic, and Hebrew.

And since time and money are not an issue, while I'm at it I would go to culinary school.

News & Politics QotD: The Primaries

Did you or will you vote in the primaries? Do you feel as though the outcome in your state matters?

I will not, unfortunately, vote in any primary. I wish I could. However, being a registered independent in a state that only has a Republican primary excludes me. There are times when I feel like my typical Democratic vote in a highly Republican state often renders my vote meaningless. South Dakota will probably never be a blue state, at least in my lifetime. Therefore, my vote tends to get lost in amongst the thousands of votes on the other side. Oh well, my only recourse would be to move to a blue state, and I don't plan on moving any decade soon.

I had won a CD player at the school sponsored Graduation Party. So the next day I ran out and bought this CD. While listening to it at home I was accused by my uncle (a country music singing, Baptist minister) of listening to inappropriate music. So, in front of all my relatives who were in town for my graduation, I had to go through the lyrics, song by song and ask him to find the parts that were inappropriate. Funny enough, he couldn't. He wasn't very happy with me for showing him up in front of the entire family, but he has since forgiven me.

This album started a love affair with Natalie Merchant's voice and writing style that continues today.

Music QotD: I'll Fight You

Have you ever gotten into an argument over an artist, song or CD? If so, who did you argue with and why?

I don't think it would really qualify as an argument, but I do love to get Virg's goat from time to time. Whenever we hear the song "I want my MTV" I always sing the words wrong. In the background there is a voice singing "moo-lah, moo-lah". I sing it boolah boolah, like a 1920's cheerleader or something ridiculous. It drive Virg nuts. At one point he actually thought I was just stupid enough to have the words wrong. At least now, he knows I am just doing it to get him.

What are you most grateful for in your life right now?

My family and friends. Right now, my immediate family is in a very good time in our lives. We are all happy and healthy. Virg is very close to finishing school and finally becoming a full-time teacher. The boys are growing into young men right before my eyes. I could not be more proud of them. I have a decent job that (for the most part) I enjoy. Even our extended family seems to be on a good track right now. I live a life of very little drama. This is a fact that I often take for granted, until I hear others talking about their family. Peace is easily overlooked, but when it is noticed, should be something we celebrate and are grateful for. Life is good!
