QotD: Indecision 2008
What do you think of Stephen Colbert's satirical bid for the U.S. Presidency?
Let me preface this post with "I LOVE STEPHEN COLBERT". Ok, that's out of my system. I wish I could give one simple concise answer to this question, unfortunately I am torn. Part of me says that this is hilarious. I think that by poking fun at the process, Mr. Colbert is highlighting many of the flaws in our presidention selection process. I do believe that we need to revise how things are done and how candidates are selected. By no means do I think that I have all of the answers, but it is hard to deny that this seems to be an antiquated process. The other part of me thinks that this is too big of a deal to be treated so flippantly. The selection of our president is perhaps the most important task that we citizens take on in this country. This is the one time that the general population truely has a say in how our country will be handled. This is where we, the American people can really speak our minds. Sadly, not enough of the population takes this task seriously. Our voter turn-outs are pathetic, and I would love to see a study done on how many of the voters have actually researched their candidate and know what/who they are voting for. Too often our view of the candidates is determined by the media. We get more information from Chris Matthews, Wolf Blitzer, and Bill O'Reilley than we do from the candidates themselves. Our debates are flawed. They cannot even really be called debates, but rather should be called sound-bites. We don't get to see our candidates really debate the issue, we only get to see the small bits of information that they can spew out in 30 seconds.
Ok, sorry, I will get off of my political soapbox and let you all return to your day.
